How Glossop businesses can get busier online

With more business than ever being transacted on the web, we asked Lyndon Ogden of Dark Peak Digital to write us a short series of articles about getting found and getting busy online. Here we go with tip number one.
Take advantage of what’s free! Google dominate the search engine business with over 90% of people looking for a product or service, using them to find what they need.

The problem for businesses is that there is limited space on Google’s first page and unless you are on the first page the opportunity for traffic and sales is minimal. In fact, position #1 in Google receives in excess of 46% of the traffic whilst position #10 might enjoy only 3%. As a local Solicitor, Accountant or Tradesman, you have to be featured on page one or you are missing potentially the largest advertising opportunity that there is available.
There are multiple ways to achieve this including paid advertising and search engine optimisation. However, the place to start is with a free service available from Google called Google My Business. Believe it or not, nine out of ten website owners do not take advantage of this excellent service despite it being free and easy to set up!
Google My Business connects businesses directly with customers, whether they're looking on Search, Maps or Google.  It allows you to give customers the right information at the right time, whether that be driving directions to your business in Google maps, opening hours in Search or your phone number they can click on to call you on mobile phones.
How difficult is it? All you have to do is fill in your information online. How much information is up to you but it is worth taking the time to describe your products and services and upload some pictures of your logo, products or even yourself if you have some available. The more information you give them, the more likely you are to feature and the more likely to get new customers. When you have submitted your information, Google verify your address usually by sending you a card in the post. The card may take two or three weeks to arrive but when it does, you are minutes away from going live. Simply sign in to the website again and enter the code you received on the card. That’s it, job done and you are on your way to online success.
