Correction - Robert Hamnett

I write in relation to your article on my g.g.grandfather Robert Hamnett.
You have posted a picture of his son James Hamnett who was in the printing and publishing business. The booklet, (we have a copy) actually states that it's a picture of the publisher not the author.
I have many pictures of Robert and have attached one for you.

I have a large amount of material on Robert, his father was a businessman, Edward Hamnett of Stockport.
He was born in Stockport in 1855 and after the death of his mother as a young child he moved to Mottram where he lived with his uncle, James Hamnett, a watchmaker. He spent his early years in Mottram before moving to 44 St Marys Road in Glossop, his occupation being watchmaker journeyman. He remained in Glossop with his family, having a shop at 14a High Street East selling watches/clocks/rings etc, later he became the steward of the Conservative Club in Glossop.

We have gold items in the family with his own hallmark there on.
He was a member of the board of guardians, a Freemason, a prominent member of Glossop Detachment of Volunteers (secretary) amongst other groups.
His half brother William was an Alderman of Stockport, director of Stockport FC and successful businessman.

Regards

Bernie Hamnett Wright
