Parkrun comes to Glossop

Saturday 26th September saw the arrival of parkrun to Glossop, and 157 runners completed the 5k route around Manor Park. The phenomenon of parkrun has been growing since the very first run took place nearly 11 years ago in London, and there are now over 430 parkruns in the UK, as well as events in Australia, New Zealand, Denmark, France, Ireland, Italy, Poland Russia, South Africa and the USA.

Event Director, Dan Ellingworth says "I was watching the TV reports of the 10th anniversary last year, and decided we needed to try and get parkrun to Glossop". What followed was nearly a year's fundraising efforts, including volunteering at the Greater Manchester Marathon and the Chatsworth Triathlon by volunteers from across Glossop. "The fundraising effort involved well over 100 people's time and effort, which I think shows the strength of feeling for a Glossop parkrun" says Dan. The fundraising effort was boosted by generous donations by local businesses Global Therapies, Peak Active Sports, Station House Dental Practice, Marple Polymers, as well as the Glossopdale Harriers Running Club, Derbyshire County Council and a number of personal donations.
The event is completely free to take part, open to all, runners or walkers, of all standards and of all ages, though children aged 11 or under need to be accompanied round the course by an adult. Runners need to register once at the parkrun website (http://www.parkrun.org.uk/register/) , print out a barcode and bring it along to the run, which takes place every Saturday at 9am. The team delivering the parkrun are all volunteers, and anyone wanting to volunteer, whether they are runners or not, can contact the team at This email address is being protected from spambots. Saturday's event was deemed a great success: 46 runners made their parkrun debut (the others had run at other parkrun courses), and 11 runners were aged under 17. The runners were very enthusiastic about the course round Manor Park, and were looking forward to returning next week to give the course another go. Why don't you join them?
