Glossop Golf Club opens new short game academy

It took over two years to plan and prepare, and last Friday Glossop and District Golf Club opened their new all-weather short game academy. Supported by a significant Sport England grant under the Inspired Facilities Initiative the Club have opened one of the best short game practice facilities in the north of England.

To celebrate the day, in the morning the Club hosted a round of the Derbyshire and Cheshire Junior league matches for 6 teams and 30 Juniors from different clubs in the region. In the afternoon they held a formal opening ceremony with principal guest Andrew Bingham MP. Also in attendance were the Mayor and Lady Mayor of High Peak. In his opening speech Andrew Bingham explained how he felt committed to sporting activities in the region, especially amongst the juniors as he believed it provided them with so many learning opportunities with life skills as well as fresh air and exercise.
In his speech, Club Captain Roger Hart explained how the Club were providing the facilities as part of their approach to reverse the national decline in golf. The Club is committed to developing a club that is inclusive and welcoming to all. The new facilities will enable the Club Professional Jamie Goodhall to expand his coaching facilities, and he is looking to particularly focus on the younger members of the community.
